UN Sustainable Development Goals Report 2022

SDG Progress Report 2022 – A Wake-Up Call for Global Action

Published: 7 July 2022 by UN DESA (United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs)

Overview: A Critical Moment for SDG Progress

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Report 2022 is the United Nations’ official yearly report on how the world is moving toward achieving the 2030 Agenda. It brings together the latest data and estimates from more than 200 countries, with input from over 50 UN agencies and regional organisations.

This report delivers a serious message: progress on the SDGs is not just slowing down—it is at risk of going backwards. Multiple overlapping crises like the COVID‑19 pandemic, climate change, and armed conflicts are making it hard for countries to keep moving forward. These problems are affecting efforts in health, poverty reduction, education, gender equality, peace, and protecting the environment.

How Global Crises Are Affecting Progress

The report highlights some major setbacks caused by these overlapping crises:

  • Around 15 million extra deaths were connected to COVID‑19 by the end of 2021.
  • About 93 million people fell into extreme poverty in 2020.
  • 147 million children missed more than half of their in-person schooling, with many possibly never going back.
  • Global CO₂ emissions went up by 6% in 2021, wiping out earlier gains during the pandemic and moving us away from the net-zero goals of the Paris Agreement.

These events are putting not just development goals at risk, but also the well-being of people and the planet.

Some Signs of Progress Despite the Challenges

Even with all the difficulties, some positive changes are happening

  • Use of renewable energy increased by 25% from 2010 to 2019, making up 17.7% of global energy in 2019.
  • More people in urban areas gained access to electricity, and energy efficiency improved.
  • Climate finance to developing countries reached USD 24 billion in 2019, showing that support continues.

These examples show that consistent investment and strong partnerships can help move progress forward even during tough times.

Vulnerable Groups Are Hit the Hardest

Women, children, people with disabilities, refugees, and those living in poorer countries are suffering the most. These groups are struggling with:

  • Economic challenges
  • Trouble getting essential services
  • More exposure to climate risks, health crises, and conflict

Tracking SDG Progress: The 2022 Progress Chart

The report includes a traffic-light style chart to show how countries are doing on key SDG targets. It uses trend and level indicators:

🟢 On Track
🟠 Off Track
🔴 Stagnating or Getting Worse

The chart shows serious drops in areas like:

  • Poverty
  • Food security
  • Malaria control
  • Immunisation
  • Employment

It also points out major data gaps, especially in gender equality, climate, and governance indicators.

Three Pillars to Rescue SDG Progress

The report suggests three main steps to get progress back on track:

1. Global Financial Rescue

  • Reform global finance systems
  • Give debt relief and fiscal help
  • Support the WHO and poor countries with SDG-focused funding

2. Strengthening Governance

  • Build strong, inclusive institutions
  • Increase transparency and citizen involvement
  • Ensure leaders are held accountable

3. Accelerated Sectoral Action

  • Make big improvements in:

    • Food and nutrition systems

    • Clean energy and infrastructure

    • Digital access and new jobs

    • Social protection systems

    • Climate action and biodiversity

Personal Stories Behind the Numbers

On 1 August 2022, the UN published a special flipbook called “Bringing Data to Life.” It shares 37 real-life stories from 24 countries.

These include:

  • Farmers dealing with climate problems

  • Children are trying to recover from missing school

These stories help people better understand the data and show how global goals are connected to real human experiences.

Why the SDG Report 2022 Is Important & How It Helps the World Move Forward

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Report 2022 is more than just a collection of statistics. It is the United Nations’ primary tool for tracking global progress toward the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This report plays an important role in

  • Helping governments and policymakers identify challenges and set priorities for action
  • Guiding international organisations and donors to make informed funding and program decisions
  • Supporting businesses, civil society, and innovators in aligning their strategies with the SDGs

The 2022 report acts as both a wake-up call and a roadmap. It reveals the severe setbacks caused by multiple global crises—including the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, and conflicts—and highlights how these disruptions have slowed or reversed progress on many SDGs.

At the same time, the report offers data-driven insights and solutions that can help the world get back on track. It shows that with bold leadership, strong partnerships, and urgent action, we can still achieve the global goals and build a more inclusive, sustainable, and resilient future—but only if we act now.
