The journey toward the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development started long before it was officially agreed upon in 2015. This global plan, accepted by all United Nations Member States, is a shared roadmap for creating a better world. It aims to bring peace, improve lives, grow the economy, and protect the environment—for both people and the planet.
One of the main goal of this plan are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These goals call on all countries to take action to end poverty, protect nature, and make sure everyone can live a healthy, safe, and happy life by the year 2030.
Over 178 countries adopted Agenda 21, a comprehensive plan aimed at global sustainable development and environmental protection.
World leaders adopted the Millennium Declaration, which led to the creation of the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), targeting poverty reduction by 2015.
The Johannesburg Declaration built on previous efforts, strengthening global commitments to fight poverty and protect the environment through partnerships and cooperation.
The outcome document “The Future We Want” called for the creation of a new set of goals – the SDGs – and led to the establishment of the UN High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development.
The UN General Assembly set up a 30-member group to draft the proposed SDGs.
The High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) is now the main UN platform that checks progress on the SDGs each year.
The Division for Sustainable Development Goals (DSDG), part of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA), supports countries in making the SDGs a reality. DSDG works in important areas such as:
DSDG also checks how the UN is doing in reaching the goals and spreads awareness to involve more people in the process.
To succeed, everyone must take part—governments, businesses, local communities, and individuals. At 17esg, we are proud to support this global mission and help bring the world together to build a sustainable future for all.
