Mr. Juwang Zhu

Director, Division for Public Institutions and Digital Government Acting Director, Division for Sustainable Development Goals (DSDG)

Mr. Juwang Zhu currently leads two key divisions at the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA). As Director of the Division for Public Institutions and Digital Government, he works to promote effective, inclusive, and accountable governance systems—supporting countries in achieving Sustainable Development Goal 16, which emphasizes peace, justice, and strong institutions.

In addition to this role, Mr. Zhu also serves as the Acting Director of the Division for Sustainable Development Goals (DSDG). This division supports global efforts to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. His responsibilities include providing policy guidance, encouraging collaboration across sectors, supporting capacity-building efforts, and leading initiatives in key areas such as climate, energy, oceans, science, transport, water, and natural resources. He also addresses the special development needs of Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

Career Highlights

Mr. Zhu has held several leadership roles throughout his career. From 2008 to 2013, he served as Chief of the Office of the Under-Secretary-General at UN DESA, where he advised on strategic policy and managed coordination between the department and the Executive Office of the Secretary-General. He also played an important role in aligning UN DESA’s capacity-building programs with global development goals.

He was appointed Special Advisor to the Secretary-General during the Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, helping organize and coordinate support for this major global event and its outcomes.

Mr. Zhu completed his undergraduate studies at Shanghai International Studies University in 1982 and continued postgraduate work at Beijing Foreign Studies University. He also holds two master’s degrees
